Updates on Our Nutrition Information & Our Registered Dietitian

A few weeks ago, we announced some exciting news. Our new registered Dietitian, Jessica Barrett, has joined our staff to help us make sure that all of our fare is in-line with FDA guidelines and as healthy and wholesome as possible.

Jessica studied at Winthrop University receiving a bachelor’s degree in human nutrition. Upon graduating, she attended Winthrop’s dietetic internship program studying clinical, community, and food management. While attending Winthrop, she worked at Nourish Charlotte, first doing administrative work and quickly wiggled her way into the kitchen to work alongside some of our amazing chefs. Needless to say, we have a long standing relationship with her and we are so dang happy to have her on staff as a specialist in her field.

As she's gone through our full catalog of dishes, you may see some changes on the website and on our container labels. We wanted to shed some light on that and explain the reasoning.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) updated the Nutrition Facts label in 2016 to reflect updated scientific information, new nutrition research, and input from the public. This is the first major update to the label in over 20 years. The refreshed design and updated information will make it easier for consumers to make informed food choices that contribute to lifelong healthy eating habits.

We decided that it was time for us to update our labels as well. Some of the changes we’ve made include using the new FDA Nutrition Facts label, as well as aligning our serving sizes to FDA recommendations.

For example: A small Nourish side is approximately 1 ½ cups. According to the  FDA, a serving size for a side is ½ cup, therefore, there are approximately 3 servings in a small side. This is not to say you can’t eat the whole thing, confession….we do.

An added feature to the new FDA label allows you to see the Nutrition Facts for the entire container of food, just in case you plan on eating more than the listed serving size. For entrees, a small serving size is ½ of a small entrée, but we also provide you with the nutrition facts for the entire container.

All of our labels are based on a small container size, unless the item is one size only such as the Salad of the Week. If the item has large and family size options, we list the nutrition facts adjustments below the ingredients on the label. Example: Nutrition Facts double for large and triple for family size.

We hope this helps as we transition our serving sizes and labels. We are so happy to have Jessica on board. Having her eyes on each meal that we add to our menu is a huge value to all of us and we are happy to be able to offer this service to our customers. If you have any questions or comments, we are always here and would love to hear from you!
