Vegan for the planet! Why going vegan is the best way to lessen your environmental impact.
The hotly-debated topic of which diet is best for Planet Earth might finally be over, thanks to a new study just published in Science Magazine. The study calls switching to a plant-based vegan diet the "single biggest way to reduce our environmental impact on the planet."

This is news to my ears! One of the reasons I started Nourish was to make environmentally-aware food available to the public. You can read more about the myriad ways in which we keep our footprint small here

Over the years, we've seen a number of detractors to this way of eating (and living). But as we persist, more studies are done, and more benefits are discovered. And let's not forget the study that started it all, shall we? I'm of course referring to the China Study. Here we are, 23 years later, continuing to examine the premise that plant-based diets ensure good health for not only humans, but the planet as well. Soon, the truth will be accepted: that a vegan diet can keep us healthier, longer, than any other diet, and does exactly the same for our planet.

You can read the whole text of the new study here, but here are a few of my favorite bits:

"Researchers at the University of Oxford found that cutting meat and dairy products from your diet could reduce an individual's carbon footprint by up to 73 per cent."
"If everyone stopped eating these foods, they found that global farmland use could be reduced by 75 per cent, an area equivalent to the size of the US, China, Australia and the EU combined. Not only would this result in a significant drop in greenhouse gas emissions, it would also free up wild land lost to agriculture, one of the primary causes for mass wildlife extinction."

For the planet, the animals, and ourselves, we choose a vegan diet. And more and more of the world is choosing the same!
